How to move to Cyprus

So, we’ve shown you some of the best places to live in Cyprus but, before you start packing your bags, there are a few things you need to know and we’re going to run through these in this section:

First things first, the official currency of Cyprus is the Euro (and has been since 2008). The official languages of the wonderful island are Turkish and Greek, however, English is also widely spoken in most towns and cities.

Am I allowed to move to Cyprus ?

This depends on where you currently live and we’ll explore this here:

EU / EEA & Swiss citizens

If you are a legal resident of an EU or EEA country or of Switzerland, the good news is that you don’t need a visa or resident permit to move to Cyprus. The catch here is that you must be working or studying in Cyprus or have a Cypriot member of your family living there. If you fulfil this criteria then all you have to do is stay in Cyprus for three months, after which you just have to register your visit / stay with the Cypriot authorities.

Non EU / EEA citizens

If you don’t live in Switzerland or an EU / EEA country, you will almost certainly need a visa in order to move to Cyprus. You will also need to obtain a residence permit. You must apply for and receive both your visa and your residence permit before moving to Cyprus and you can do this via a Cyprus embassy or immigration office (you should be able to find details of these online).

If you are moving to Cyprus to work, you will also need a work visa. SImilarly, if you’re planning to study in Cyprus you will need a student visa.

Permanent residence in Cyprus

If you’re hoping to make Cyprus your permanent home, you may be entitled to apply for Permanent Residency which is valid for five years. You may qualify for this if:

– You have lived in Cyprus for at least five years with a temporary residence permit

– During these five years, you did not leave Cyprus for a period of time longer than three months

– You have bought a property in Cyprus for at least 300,000 Euros (and you can show evidence that you bought this property from funds outside of cyprus

– You have an annual income (outside of Cyprus) of at least 30,000 Euros (add 5000 Euros if you have dependent children aged between 18 and 25 and 8000 Euros if you have dependent parents)

Before making the move to Cyprus, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the right visas and permits.

New beginnings

Moving to a new country is an adventure and Cyprus offers lots of opportunities as well as a good standard of living and some of the world’s most stunning beaches and countryside. It can, however, be stressful and it’s incredibly important that you make sure that you obtain all permissions and visas needed before getting on your flight to this beautiful island.
